FRAXEL LASER THERAPY

What It Treats

Fraxel laser treatment is used to repair damage from chronic sun exposure and to improve texture, color, fine lines and even deep lines. The technology is ideal for uneven pigmentation (including age and sun spots), texture, fine lines, acne scars and darkening skin on the upper neck. Although the face is the most common area treated, the Fraxel laser can also be used on delicate skin areas, such as the neck, chest and hands.

How It Works

The Fraxel laser creates thousands of microscopic but deep columns in the skin, called microthermal treatment zones. Within these zones, old pigmented cells are eliminated. Surrounding tissue, however, is left unaffected and intact. Because of this unique “fractional” process, the skin is able to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once.

What the Treatment Involves

The most common treatment regimen for the Fraxel laser is three to five sessions, spaced three to seven weeks apart. A more flexible spacing of sessions can be arranged, however, if that best meets your needs. Each session lasts about an hour (including prep time) and is designed to target between 15 percent and 20 percent of the skin’s surface.

The procedure is performed under a local anesthetic. Your skin will appear slightly pinkish and swollen for several days after the procedure. However, most people find that they can return to their regular activities either following treatment or the next day.

Results are immediate, but you’ll notice the greatest improvement in about two to three months–after your skin has fully repaired the deep dermal tissue treated by the Fraxel laser.
