MIRADRY

It is a daily struggle and embarrassing problem for millions of Americans that may affect every aspect of daily life—axillary hyperhidrosis, commonly known as excessive underarm sweating.

Excessive underarm sweating typically begins after the onset of puberty and the people who suffer from it often struggle with daily outbreaks, ruined clothes, the need to apply excessive antiperspirant and even challenging social situations.

Zel Skin & Laser Specialists is one of the first centers in the country to offer a quick, non-invasive procedure that provides a lasting solution to excessive underarm sweating. Called miraDry, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis by delivering precisely directed energy to the region where the sweat glands reside, effectively eliminating them and resulting in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat. The procedure has been cleared by the FDA and clinically proven to reduce sweat and provide lasting results without chemicals, downtime or surgery.

“Aside from the fact that underarm sweating damages clothing, I see many people at my office who suffer much embarrassment from this condition,” said Brian Zelickson, MD, medical director of Zel Skin & Laser Specialists. “This is the only FDA-approved device for permanently reducing excess underarm sweating.”

The miraDry procedure is done under a local anesthetic and typically takes an hour to complete. Two procedures are spaced three months apart to maximize the results. There is no downtime after the procedure and most patients will notice a dramatic reduction in underarm sweat—an average of 86 percent in one clinical study. The results are lasting since sweat glands do not regenerate once they have been eliminated. The procedure does not negatively affect the body’s ability to cool itself since the average person has more than 4 million sweat glands with an average of 2 percent located in the underarms.

Miradry Frequently Asked Question

How Long Does Miradry Work For?
The miraDry system heats the sweat glands to the point where they are eliminated. Your body doesn’t regenerate new sweat glands, so once the sweat glands have been eliminated, the results should be lasting. Clinical data supports this.

Is there a risk of having my skin burnt by miraDry?
The miraDry system has been carefully designed to protect the outer skin from any heat that is generated. There is a cooling mechanism in the handpiece that allows this to happen. However, as with any device that sends energy into the skin, there is always a slight risk of overheating which is why it is important to have the procedure administered by a fully trained health care provider.

How Does MiraDry Compare to Botox Cost Wise?
It depends. A patient typically needs two miraDry procedures to provide a long lasting result. Botox is temporary (usually lasts about 6 months) so you will need ongoing injections at the prescribed intervals to see continued results.

How Much Does MiraDry Cost?
The cost of miraDry varies based upon the physician practice where you are being treated. Two treatments are required and costs for the two treatments combined can vary.

Does Miradry Replace Deodorant?
Since miraDry will eliminate the glands that produce sweat and odor you may not need deodorant after receiving the treatment.

What is the Cost for miraDry Procedure and is It Covered by Insurance
The cost of miraDry varies based upon the physician practice where you are being treated. Two treatments are required and costs for the two treatments combined can vary from $2500-$4000. miraDry is not covered by insurance.

How Exactly Does MiraDry Work? What Makes It More Permanent Than Botox?
miraDry works by eliminating the sweat glands. Heating the sweat glands destroys them through a process called thermolysis. Botox works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals which tells the sweat glands to work. Botox is not meant to be a permanent solution.

What is Involved in the Treatment Process for Miradry?
The treatment is very straightforward. You will need to shave your underarms 2-3 days before treatment and local anesthesia will be applied before treatment begins. The whole process takes about an hour.
