SUN–PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

You know how important it is to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Exposure to UV rays is the leading cause of premature aging of the skin, including wrinkles and pigmentations such as “age” spots. UV rays are also, of course, the leading cause of skin cancer, the most common–and preventable–of all cancers in the United States.

What you may not know is how easily UV rays penetrate most of the lightweight clothing you and your family wear when out in the summer sun. Take that favorite white cotton t–shirt of yours. Its ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is only about 6 (or 3 when wet). That rating is well below UPF 40, the minimum standard now required for fabrics that want to provide “excellent UV protection.”
