If you have rosacea, you’re not alone. An estimated 14 million Americans, most in their 30s and 40s, are affected by this chronic skin condition. Rosacea usually begins as a simple tendency to flush or blush easily. Eventually, symptoms progress to a persistent redness in the center of the face, particularly the nose. Small blood vessels swell and become visible, and pimples appear across the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. Because of these symptoms, the condition is often incorrectly called “adult acne.”

Rosacea is not curable, but its symptoms are very treatable. You should seek care as soon as possible, for early treatments are often the most effective. For inflammatory symptoms, such as rosacea–related acne, see a dermatologist for treatment, which will likely include oral and topical antibiotics. Once the inflammation has subsided, you can further improve your skin’s appearance with one or more of the procedures listed below.

Chemical Peels: Several types of chemical peels can be very effective in improving the redness and other symptoms of rosacea.

Laser Therapy: This is the most powerful method of treating rosacea. It substantially reduces redness and visible blood vessels and repairs and refinishes damaged skin. Multiple treatments are needed for best results.

Medical Skin Care Products: When you have rosacea, you must be exceptionally careful about the products you put on your skin. Many over–the–counter skin care products contain ingredients, such as alcohol and acids that will worsen your symptoms. At Zel, we offer a variety of professional skin care products — cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens and so on — that gently care for your skin without causing rosacea flare–ups. These are products you won’t find in any drugstore or department store.

Microdermabrasion/Vibradermabrasion: These non–surgical treatments polish the skin’s surface, helping to repair and rejuvenate skin blemished by rosacea. They also increase the effectiveness of chemical peels used to treat rosacea.

Phototherapy (Intense Pulsed Light Treatments): The intense pulses of light emitted by this treatment penetrate the skin and stimulate blood vessels to constrict, thus helping to reduce the symptoms of rosacea.
