Sun–tanned skin is not healthy skin. Instead, a tan is a sign that the skin is damaged and desperately trying to protect itself from more of the sun’s harmful rays. It’s also a sign that the skin is undergoing something called “extrinsic aging” — looking older than its biological age.
The culprit in sunlight is ultraviolet radiation — both UVA and UVB — which penetrates deep into the skin, breaking down its connective tissues (collagen and elastin fibers). Without this supportive tissue, the damaged skin stretches and sags, forming premature lines and wrinkles. It also becomes drier and rougher. In addition, photoaging creates pigment changes in the skin, including solar lentigines (age spots), poikiloderma (reddish–brown areas of discoloration) and melasma (mottled brownish areas). The sun also causes the permanent stretching, or dilation, of small blood vessels just under the skin, leading to spider veins and other vascular marks.
At Zel, we offer many types of effective, non–surgical treatments that help repair and revitalize age– and sun–damaged skin. We often recommend combining treatments for even greater results. And to protect your skin from future sun damage, we offer the finest sun protection products available.
Botox: Injections of botulinum toxin type A (Botox) can help reduce facial lines and wrinkles, particularly the deep creases between the eyes and on the forehead and the smaller “crow’s feet” lines on either side of the eyes.
Chemical Peels: Because no skin is the same, Zel offers several types of chemical peels, from mild glycolic–, lactic– and fruit–acid treatments to deeper peels. In addition to reducing fine lines, peels help lighten the age spots that often accompany wrinkles; they also soften dry, rough skin.
Dermal Fillers: A variety of fillers can reduce or even eliminate all sorts of wrinkle problems, from frown lines on the forehead to those deep “marionette” creases between the mouth and the chin. Zel offers many different dermal fillers, including Restylane, Radiesse, Juvederm, CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast.
Laser Therapy: Laser energy is used to remove the upper layers of sun–damaged skin. As new cells form during the healing process, the skin appears smoother and younger looking. Zel offers several state–of–the–art laser treatments.
Medical Skin Care Products: Scientific advances have led to the development of highly effective skin care products for correcting and repairing sun– and age–damaged skin. Some, such as alphahydroxy acids (AHA), are prescription–only products. Others, sometimes known as “cosmeceuticals,” do not require a prescription, but because of their effects on the physiology of the skin, are only offered through physicians. Zel carries only the best of the best within these product lines.
Microdermabrasion/Vibradermabrasion: Both of these non–surgical treatments rejuvenate your skin cells, improving their texture and elasticity, diminishing fine lines and lightening areas of darker pigmentation. Both procedures also help enhance the penetration powers of chemical peels.
Phototherapy (Intense Pulsed Light Treatments): Using intense pulses of visible light this procedure the formation of new collagen, producing healthier, younger–looking skin. In addition to reducing wrinkles, the treatment helps minimize enlarged pores and diminishes age spots and other irregular pigmentation. One of Zel’s popular combination treatments is light therapy with an “ALA boost.” ALA is a topical serum that helps intensify the effects of the light therapy, resulting in positive results with fewer treatments.
