Laser Treatments

Restore, Rejuvenate, and Resurface in Edina, Plymouth, and Downtown Minneapolis

Even the most cared-for skin will show signs of aging. Over time, its color and texture will change. Laser treatments at the Minneapolis area’s Zel Skin & Laser Specialists can lessen the appearance of these signs of aging on your face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.

The best laser treatment for a specific patient will depend on the type of correction needed for a skin condition or skin type. That’s why, at Zel Skin and Laser Specialists, we’ve invested in 15 different types of laser treatments—more than any other skin care clinic in the Twin Cities area. While lasers are very effective at treating many conditions, there are conditions that will not respond well to lasers. When we make a recommendation for the best treatment for you, you can trust it’s because we’re choosing the ideal strategy—not merely picking what’s available from a limited range of skin care technologies.

Popular Laser Skin Treatments

Learn about our most commonly recommended laser treatments for restoring, rejuvenating, and resurfacing the skin:

Ablative Resurfacing Lasers

These focus on the outer layer of skin, creating micro-wounds on the surface. Recovery is anywhere between seven to 10 days.

Non-Ablative Lasers

These heat the skin tissue but do not remove it. The laser passes safely through the outer layer of skin, penetrating the tissue lying beneath. Recovery is as short as three to five days.

Fractionated Lasers

These lasers treat only part of the skin at a time like having your lawn aerated and don’t remove all the skin like “old” lasers do. This reduces downtime and results in less risk of scarring. Recovery time is also significantly reduced because the laser treatment penetrates the skin in micro-pinpoints, not large sweeping areas. Fractionated lasers include CO2RE, Fraxel Dual, Fraxel Restore, and Clear + Bright.

Alexandrite Laser

This uses a light in the red spectrum to create a wavelength that is absorbed by pigment for treating unwanted hair and tattoos.

Intense Pulsed Light

Known as IPL, this is not technically a laser treatment, but generates light energy that penetrate both red and brown pigment. It is used to treat some red and brown discolorations on the skin.

Nd:Yag/Q-Switched Yag

This laser treatment uses a crystal to produce near infrared light to reduce the appearance of some brown spots and tattoos.

Pulsed Dye Laser

This laser treatment reduces redness on the skin. It is the workhorse laser for treating rosacea and port wine stain birthmarks, as well as general redness of the skin.

What to Expect from Your Laser Treatment

Each laser treatment is customized to the patient’s unique skin needs. In general, patients should plan for a session to last about two hours, including prep time. The number of treatments needed depends on the desired results and the type of laser used. Laser treatments are generally spaced three to 12 weeks apart.

While some of the more aggressive lasers require medication to reduce discomfort and have up to a week of downtime, for many of the laser treatments, most people report experiencing only mild-to-moderate discomfort during the treatment itself, with little-to-no downtime needed after.

Even with the best recommendations and preparation, patients should understand that it’s impossible to predict exact results from laser treatments. That said, nearly everybody experiences some improvement right away, with many people achieving more dramatic results as the entire course of treatments has a chance to take effect.
