Onychomycosis: The big word for Nail Fungus

Have you noticed thickened or discolored nails on your hands or feet? These nail changes may be a clue that fungus has made your nails its’ home!

Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common problem and can be caused by a variety of different factors. Most people will first notice a discoloration of their nails. This color change can vary from white to yellow or even brown or green. As the fungal infection progresses, the nails can become thickened and in some cases even lift away from the nail bed below. In some cases, the skin on the hands or feet may be infected as well and may present as flaking or red skin.

What can I do to prevent nail fungus?

Fungus loves to grow in dark, warm environments with a bit of moisture. Keep your hands and feet dry can help prevent the fungus from creating an infection. If you are a swimmer or utilize public places – always try to wear protective footwear if you are in a shower or locker room.

What can I do to treat nail fungus?

If you think you may have fungus causing an infection in your nails or skin, we recommend seeing one of our trained Dermatology professionals to evaluate your symptoms. In some rare cases, a discolored nail may indicate something other than fungus. At your visit, you may receive a prescription for medication that will kill the fungus. There are pills, creams, washes, and lacquers available in a prescription strength to kill the fungus.

When to Schedule a Visit for Acne Treatment

It’s sometimes hard to know when to get out of the drugstore aisle and into the Dermatology office.  If you’ve been treating acne with over-the-counter treatments (such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid) for over six weeks, or if you’re developing scarring at any point, we recommend coming in for an appointment with one of our providers.  We will gently examine your skin to determine the type of acne you are dealing with and work with you to find the best regimen for your skin.

Every person is different and so are the needs of their skin. Some of the most common acne treatments we prescribe are topical antibiotics and topical retinoids.  These ingredients kill acne-causing bacteria and keep pores clear to avoid acne in the first place.  Some patients may get the optimal results with a combination of a course of oral medication and topical medicines.  During your visit, we’ll explain your treatment options and help clear your skin in a safe and effective way.
