Skin Exams – Do I need one?

The summer can take a toll on our skin! From long, sunny days to biting insects and time at the pool or beach, you may be noticing some changes on your skin. While any time of year is a good time to have skin exams, the end of summer can be a great opportunity to complete this essential part of your preventive medical care.

A skin exam, commonly called ‘cancer screens’ or ‘spot checks’, is completed by a trained dermatology professional such as a Doctor or Physician Assistant, and takes place in a medical office. During the exam, your skin will be evaluated from the top of your scalp to the tips of your toes. Virtually all health insurance plans will cover this preventive screen; however, if you are unsure of your benefits we recommend to contact your insurance company.

The exam itself only takes a few minutes but is so important in maintaining your skin health and screening against irregular moles and skin cancers. When caught early, skin cancers can be easy to treat; however, if they are left to grow and fester they can become very unsightly and dangerous. Some cancers, like melanoma, left unchecked can travel (metastasize) to other areas of your body and become deadly.

Monthly Checks

While a yearly in-office skin exam is recommended for all patients, we also recommend assessing your skin at home monthly. Look for the following:

  • Asymmetric moles
  • Borders that are irregular
  • Color that is inconsistent, or if a spot has two or more colors in it
  • Diameter larger than a pencil eraser (approximately 6mm)
  • Evolution of a spot. This includes moles or freckles that may be changing in how they look or feel.

If there are any spots on your skin that you are concerned about, or if you would like to make an appointment for your head to toe skin exam please contact us.

Preventative BOTOX®

Preventative Botox is an increasingly popular treatment. We all have movement and lines on our face. It’s natural and beautiful. What we don’t want are lines that stick around at rest, or after we’re no longer making the movement with our facial muscles. The best way to avoid this is by using BOTOX®, Dysport® or Xeomin® to decrease repetitive muscle movement on the face. This will prevent lines at rest from developing.

If you’ve never heard of preventative Botox, the concept is simple. The ingredients in a Botox injection relax tissue in the face, preventing muscles from moving as much as usual. If this is done preemptively, or as fine lines and wrinkles are forming, it can stop deep-set wrinkles from emerging. This is a great option for people just noticing signs of ageing, and it can be very effective for people of all ages. What is Preventative Botox?

Think of folding a piece of paper over and over again. If you continue to fold the paper, the crease just gets deeper. If you stop folding that paper, the crease doesn’t get deeper. This same idea applies to muscle movement on the face. For example, if you keep squinting your eyes and developing crow’s feet, the lines will eventually be present at rest. But, if you stop squinting, the lines will remain the same without growing deeper. Over time, this rest will produce new, healthy skin cells and new collagen to make the line at rest less noticeable. This is the idea behind preventative Botox.

We recommend starting BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® treatments early to stop these lines during their development phase. If you notice yourself making movements on your face that lead to lines, like raising your eyebrows repeatedly and noticing horizontal lines on your forehead, now is the time to act. Preventative Botox will relax those muscles and prevent lines at rest from developing. The treatment can be performed in a very natural way so that you don’t look ‘done.’ Instead, you’ll just continue to look like your best self.

What to Expect with Botox

A preventative Botox treatment is identical to a regular treatment. Your doctor or medical technician will sit down with you to discuss the desired results, and you’ll receive recommendations for placement and treatment. Before the injections, we’ll clean the skin and use a topical anesthetic to numb the area. The doctor will then inject the preventative Botox at the desired points. The whole treatment will typically take around 45 minutes to complete.

Once the injections are complete, you will be free to go. There is no suggested recovery period, but we recommend avoiding facial massaging for the two or three days directly following a preventative Botox treatment. The effects will become visible in seven to ten days, and the treatment will last for between three and six months.
