Indoor Tanning Bed News
We’ve long known that there’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanning bed use is not part of a healthy lifestyle. However, there have been more arguments against tanning bed use published in recent months. Cancer Epidemiology published their findings that 5-8% of all skin cancers (including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers) diagnosed in Canada during a single year (2015) were attributable to indoor tanning bed use. This equates to approximately 5,000 cases of skin cancer!
It was also reported last month that South Carolina is considering legislation to become the 18th state to ban minors from using tanning beds. During the hearings, the president of the South Carolina Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery testified that use of indoor tanning beds before the age of 35 can increase the risk of melanoma by nearly 60 percent. SIXTY percent!
These statistics are frightening and help us to emphasize how dangerous indoor tanning beds truly are.
