Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common problem and can be caused by a variety of different factors. Most people will first notice a discoloration of their nails. This color change can vary from white to yellow or even brown or green. As the fungal infection progresses, the nails can become thickened and in some cases even lift away from the nail bed below. In some cases, the skin on the hands or feet may be infected as well and may present as flaking or red skin.

Fungus loves to grow in dark, warm environments with a bit of moisture. Keep your hands and feet dry can help prevent the fungus from creating an infection. If you are a swimmer or utilize public places – always try to wear protective footwear if you are in a shower or locker room.

What can I do to treat nail fungus?

If you think you may have fungus causing an infection in your nails or skin, we recommend seeing one of our trained Dermatology professionals to evaluate your symptoms. In some rare cases, a discolored nail may indicate something other than fungus. At your visit, you may receive a prescription for medication that will kill the fungus. There are pills, creams, washes, and lacquers available in a prescription strength to kill the fungus.
